Perfect for a holiday all year round, find out more about the weather Algarve Portugal
Weather Algarve PortugalLuckily the weather in the Algarve makes it suitable as an all year-round holiday destination. It has a very stable climate, which is influenced by both the Atlantic and the Mediterranean. It is warm and moderate and is probably the sunniest place in Europe. Year round, flowers and vegetation grow, thanks to the region's sub tropical climate. |
Current weather in the Algarve | In the height of the summer it can get pretty hot, with temperatures in the low 30s, and while it can peak higher then this it tends to avoid the extreme heat of the Mediterranean. Despite the temperatures, humidity is rarely a problem.
Also the seemingly ever-constant Algarve sea breezes help to keep the temperature down. It tends to be windier in the West Algarve, as you approach the Atlantic and therefore a little cooler. Inland it can get stiflingly hot, although heading to the mountains of
Monchique
is a popular excursion. It has its own micro-climate and is a few degrees cooler. In the evenings the Algarve coastal breezes can make it a bit chilly, even in the summer.
One of the reasons that the Algarve is popular all year, is that there is not a lot of rainfall. During the summer you’re not likely to see any, with the majority being between November and March. When it does rain, it can rain for a few days in a row, which is not much consolation if it falls in the middle of your holiday.

The Seasons - Weather Algarve PortugalSpring Spring is one of my favourite times to visit the Algarve, as it starts to come alive again after the winter. As April turns into May the countryside comes alive with a profusion of wild flowers. Temperatures reach an average 18 to 20 degrees and there is plenty of sunshine. With these mild temperatures, spring is popular with the
golfers
(just take a look at the baggage carousel at Faro airport) and those partaking in other sporting activities. As the evenings become longer, they get milder, but can still be chilly if you are eating out, so come prepared.
Summer In the summer there is plenty of sunshine with about 12 hours per day. The temperatures tend to be around 30ºC, although occasionally they can reach 40ºC. If you’re driving I’d definitely recommend
hiring an air-conditioned car.
The summer is long and very dry and you’re unlikely to see any rain. Evenings in the summer are generally warm, but can occasionally turn a bit chilly.
Autumn Autumn attracts plenty of golfers, after the heat of the summer has subsided. The sea becomes a little to cold to swim in and you’ll want to turn the heating on in the pool. Evenings are generally mild but you should it can get chilly as night draws in. During the autumn months the temperatures in the Algarve reach a very pleasant 17-19 ºC. With these mild days, with plenty of sunshine, the Algarve in autumn is an ideal destination for sporting activities.
Winter Even in winter you’ll get an average of 6 hours of sunshine a day, with average temperatures around 16ºC. However you can get some colder windier days, and winter are unsurprisingly these are the wettest months. One the plus side you’ll get to see the almond trees in blossom if you’re visiting the Algarve in January or early February. |
