Casa Na Colina, a beautiful villa near Tavira to rent

Casa Na Colina, Alto do Perogil, Tavira

Casa Na Colina near Tavira
Our beautiful villa is part of a small complex perched on top of a hill on the outskirts of Tavira. It has everything you could wish for to make your holiday perfect.

Because it is on a hill, there is no through-traffic and it is very quiet, yet you are only a 25-minute walk (at a very leisurely pace) from the centre of Tavira.

There is a large communal pool with fantastic views to the hills and our spacious first-floor terrace can seat 6 comfortably for dining. There is a gas barbecue for convenience.

Sun loungers and recliners let you make the most of the sun, which bathes the terrace from about 11:00 until 18:00. We also provide folding chairs, which are great for sitting round the pool or taking to the beach. We even provide you with beach towels, so you don’t have to take up half your suitcase bringing those out.

Nearby Beaches

Talking of beaches, there are loads of very good – and often deserted – beaches within a 10-minute drive of the house. You could take the ferry from Tavira to the Ilha (one of the sandy islands that form part of the Ria Formosa national park and a buffer from the Atlantic).

At Pedras d’el Rei you can walk or take the little train (great for the kids) down to the beach, and there is a café and toilets when you get there. Manta Rota is another excellent beach, with car parking right up to the dunes and plenty of cafés and restaurants close by.

Our Favorite Eateries

Moving onto restaurants, there are plenty in the centre of Tavira so you could walk down and take a taxi back (less than 4 euros) if you didn’t want to drive. One of our favourites is on the road down into Tavira from the ‘boat island’ – the roundabout on the N125 featuring the big sculpture of the sailing boat.

It doesn’t appear to have a name, and actually doesn’t look that appealing from the road, but Jorge and Lia (he’s Portuguese and she’s Dutch) will give you a warm welcome and very reasonably priced home cooking. Lia’s soup is the best I’ve had in the Algarve and she does a great chicken curry (it’s not on the menu, you have to ask).

If you don’t mind a winding journey up into the hills, take the Cachopo road to Alcaria do Cume. There’s a Dutch-run restaurant there, called Mesa do Cume, with fantastic views across the hills and down to the sea. Lunch is the better option so as to take full advantage of the views, and you can sit outside when it’s warm enough.

They serve a lot of traditional Portuguese dishes, like rabbit stew, but it’s quite different from the usual grilled meat and salad and they have some very good vegetarian options.

The couverts are always different every time you go and are a little bit special, and their home-made bread is to die for. It’s very reasonably priced though – I think we only paid about 20 euros per head including drinks on our last visit.

Facilities in the house

Casa Na Colina terraceSo, back to the house. It has three bedrooms, one on each floor, and each has its own bathroom/shower room. Because this is also our holiday home, it is furnished and equipped like home from home (ok, maybe I did get carried away with the silk curtains in the lounge).

The kitchen has just about every utensil you could think of and plenty of pots, pans, crockery, and gadgets. All of the bedrooms and the lounge have air conditioning (essential in the height of summer, but also provide heating in the winter), and we’ve just had mosquito screens fitted on all of the windows and patio doors so you can let the breeze in without any unwelcome visitors.

There is a PC in the lounge, with broadband, so you can surf or keep in touch with the folks at home. We have Sky television (family package) and a selection of videos and DVDs. Every bedroom also has a hairdryer.

So that will leave more room in your case to take some of the local specialities back with you.Tomato jam is one of my favourites, then there’s fig cake, medronho (a kind of aircraft fuel – sorry, liqueur – made from the fruit of the strawberry tree), and the local sea salt (flor de sal) is very special.
