27 wonderful holes at Vila Sol Golf Course
Vila Sol Golf Course is part of the Vila Sol Golf and Spa resort in the Algarve. It is located close to Vilamoura, on the outskirts of Quarteira and is only 20km south-west of Faro airport. The golf course is a 27-hole affair, with 3 loops of 9-holes called the Prime, Challenge and Prestige.
It is a beautiful course to look at, being well designed and maintained to a high standard. It can’t be too shabby, as it has been the venue of the Portuguese Open twice, back in 1992 and 1993. These fairways can be quite narrow, so the emphasis is on accuracy from the tee. This is particularly true of the first few holes, which are quite tight, but the course does open out somewhat after this. There are a number of water hazards on the course to avoid and the greens are quite fast with some big slopes, making them hard to read and tricky to putt on.
The newer holes (19 to 27), while feeling a little cramped at times, are slightly more open as golf holes and somewhat less tree-lined. This nine has matured well since its inception and is good to play, however in my mind, you won’t improve on the first 18 holes at Vila Sol.
The course is generally undulating rather than being hilly, so there’s no inherent requirement to hire a buggy, although there are a few walks in-between greens and tees. I think it’s a fair test of golf, and is suitable for both low and high-handicap golfers, especially as there are a number of different tee locations to choose from. The clubhouse, if a little on the small side, is very pleasant, has good facilities and the staff are friendly. There is also a bar and restaurant here which serves good food, and according to reports, is not too pricey.
The pro-shop is housed here, where you can hire equipment. The buggies are fitted with GPS devices, which are fun, so you’ll know the distance to the green from wherever you are (and you’ll also know that that drive, was not the 300 yards you though it was!).
Next to the clubhouse is the driving range where you can practice. There is also a golf academy if you fancy a course of game improvement.
