It’s the biggest hotel in town, but should you spend your money at the Tivoli Hotel Lagos?

"Great location, beach club and breakfasts, but needs some refurbishment"

Tivoli Hotel Lagos

Tivoli Hotel in LagosLocated on a hillside on the eastern side of the town, the Tivoli hotel is a multi-building affair, covering a significant area. So, depending where you’re room is there may be a bit of waking and a few stairs to negotiate. Still, it’ll keep you fit. The hotel is well located, and is a pleasant 10-minute stroll into town and 15 minutes to the beach.

It is a pretty big hotel, with 324 rooms and is generally deserving of its 4-star status, although recent comments suggest that it is due for some refurbishment. The rooms are generally of a decent size, although this does vary and not all rooms have a great view. Overall however, it is a hotel with plenty of character.

The hotel has plenty of facilities including its own beach club, although it is a couple of kilometres from the beach. The hotel buildings surround a central courtyard, which contains the swimming pool and a children's pool. If you find it a little cold, there is an indoor heated pool in the solarium, along with the spa tub. The outdoor pool is perhaps a little small for the size of hotel, and so you’ll have to be up early to grab yourself a sun lounger. There is another pool, but this is to be found at the Beach Club.

Apart from the pools, the hotel has a health club with a Jacuzzi, sauna, steam room, a tanning room and massage rooms. There is also a gym equipped with the usual cardio and weight machines. It is a bit disappointing that apart from the Jacuzzi and indoor pool, the gym and health facilities are all charged for, although you’d expect this for a massage (which is well worth it!).

In the evenings, live entertainment is laid on by the hotel. The quality of acts can vary widely, but if it’s your thing, you’ll probably enjoy it.

Tivoli Hotel Lagos Beach Club

Tivoli Hotel Dunas Beach Club in LagosOne facility that is appreciated by guests is the hotel’s Duna Beach Club. This is located on the front at the Meia Praia beach, where guest have use of the exclusive reserved area. It is quite an up-market affair with its pretty thatched buildings, and decent facilities on offer. Here you will find a freshwater swimming pool and solarium and sun loungers with shades. However you’ll have to pay for the use of the sun loungers, which is a bit annoying, although it does seem to be the norm. The other annoyance is the piped in music, but this is a matter of taste, I suppose.

The beach bar and grill overlooks the sea and serves light meals throughout the day. Food is quite pricey and in busy periods, you can wait a fair time for food. However there are other places to eat nearby which are better and cheaper. In the evening it turns into a very pleasant restaurant serving Portuguese and international cuisine.

The beach club is about 2 kilometres from the hotel, so about 15 minutes to walk. Failing that, the hotel lays on a courtesy bus which runs once an hour during the day. This operates all year round. If you’re driving, there is a covered car park at the beach club, which is available to you at a charge

Other facilities available are three tennis courts, for which equipment can be hired and in July and August there is a free Kids’ Club.

Tivoli Hotel Lagos – Restaurants and bars

The Hotel Tivoli has three restaurants, although don’t restrict yourself to eating in the hotel, as there are many good restaurants within a five minute walk. The restaurants in the hotel are:

Lacobriga Restaurant which is the main restaurant in the Hotel. In the evenings the menu is International, although there are also themed nights. The Lacobriga is where you’ll have breakfast, and it is one of the highlights of the hotel. The buffet style breakfast offers a huge selection and is best eaten outside on the terrace overlooking the town.

For Italian cuisine, there’s the O Cantinho Italiano Restaurant which is open for dinners in a relaxed an informal atmosphere.

The Pateo Velho Restaurant has a terrace, for pleasant al-fresco dining in the warmer summer months. The menu here is Portuguese specialties in addition to grilled seafood, meats.

The hotel has a couple of bars (plus the bar at the Duna Beach Club). The Lobby Bar is the place to have a drink before eating in the Lacobriga restaurant. There is also live music in the evenings. The Pool Bar, which is only open in the summer has a large terrace with umbrellas. Both bars serve light food and snacks.
