A converted convent, Tavira Pousada is the best of the Algarve Pousadas

Tavira Pousada Convento da Graca

This Pousada is located on the hill next to the castle and facing the main square. It is in the middle of Tavira, and while not the easiest to find, its great location means that you’re just a few minutes walk from anything you want in the town.

Tavira Pousada in converted conventTo me, the Pousada Graça Convent in Tavira is what a Pousada should be and is designated a Historic Pousada. Indeed it is built in an historic building, a 17th Century convent originally used by Augustinian Nuns. It has been beautifully converted, in a modern style, while complementing and retaining the character of its long history. It is a good blend of the old and the new. The convent and its cloisters are built around a central courtyard, which has a sense of peace and seclusion, making you forget that you are in the centre of town.

Tavira Pousada Facilities

The Pousada has 36 air-conditioned rooms: 5 suites, 7 double and 24 twin rooms, some of which have small balconies. The spacious rooms, which are well decorated in a modern style, are very clean and comfortable. Some rooms have good views and a couple of them have private gardens.

Outside are well kept and there are two swimming pools, one for adults and one for children.

Each Pousada has its own restaurant serving regional cuisine. The cuisine here is unsurprisingly biased towards fish and seafood, although not exclusively. The restaurant here can hold its own against any in Tavira, although it’s not cheap, and as the menu does not change often, it might become a bit boring after a few days. Not to worry as there are plenty of decent restaurants in Tavira.

Breakfast is served in the 17th Century cloisters, and offers a large selection of buffet delights.

Staying here is not cheap if you pay the rack rate but there are promotions to watch out for, if you can take advantage of them and other deals to be had. You can book directly through Pousadas de Portugal, or from any number of hotel companies. To check on who goes here and the best deals, click here
