Sao Bras Pousada - a luxury get-away set in the hillsThe Sao Bras Pousada is located above the small town and old ’cork capital’ of Portugal; Sao Bras de Alportel. The town is located about 20 km north of Faro. This Pousada is the place to choose if you want to get away from the hustle and bustle of the busier resorts for your Algarve holiday, although these are readily accessible by car.
Because of its position on a hill overlooking the town, the Sao Bras Pousada enjoys fantastic views over the town and through the valley down to the sea. The flip side to this is that it is quite isolated, being a couple of kilometres outside Sao Bras de Alportel. If you don’t want to stay at the Pousada during the day or eat in the Pousada’s restaurant each night, you’ll have to venture out, which means that a car is essential here. Sao Bras Pousada FacilitiesThis hotel was the first Algarve Pousada to be built, back in the 1940s. While it started out small, it now has 33 rooms. These are all air-conditioned, consisting of 33 rooms, of which 9 are doubles and 23 are twin rooms.Rooms are reasonably sized and plainly decorated and so not as stylish as you might expect from a Pousada. The rooms on the upper floor are reportedly bigger, with better views. Not always recommended by the guide books, but the restaurant gets the thumbs up from the guest reviewers. The food is regional, as per the mandate of Pousadas, and in this area this provides a fusion of flavours from the hills and the sea, while desserts feature almonds and figs, which are abundant in these parts. While you may love the food, the menu doesn’t change very often, so you may want to eat out in Sao Bras as well, where there are plenty of good restaurants to choose from. If you’re feeling sporty, you might like to grab a racket and play a couple of sets on the tennis court. Staying here is not cheap if you pay the rack rate but there are promotions to watch out for, if you can take advantage of them and other deals to be had. The Pousada de Sao Bras is a white building topped with red terracotta tiles, so Moorish in its style. The Pousada has been designated a 'Charm' Pousada, and unlike some of the Historic Pousadas, it is quite modern looking, which while quite impressive is not the prettiest Pousada.
