Salgados Golf Course - Scottish links in the Algarve?

Salgados golf course is a little different to most other Algarve courses, being a mixture of a Scottish links course and an American style course. By that I mean that it is a very flat and open course with little or no relief from bushes or trees, links style, but also has plenty of water hazards as you would find on many American courses.

The course is set by the sea on land behind the Praia de Galé beach, between Albufeira and Armação de Pera. It is an 18-hole par 72 course, and at just over 6000m (off the championship tees), is not a long course by any stretch of the imagination.

But is it a good course to play? Well yes is the answer, once you have got past its lack of definition and beauty. Despite its lack of length it is a good test of golf. With water on most holes (sometimes on both sides of the fairway), you’re going to have to be accurate (or bring lots of golf balls). This is made more difficult because of the wind, which is always prevalent, unsurprisingly, given its open terrain directly on the sea.

However, when I played, the fairways were soft, helping keep slightly off centre shots on the fairway, rather than in the water. The greens however were quite fast and not easy to read. To add to the challenge there are a couple of long par 3s over 170m.

Salgados golf course is suitable for all standards of golfer, although the better player, who can keep it straight off the tee will probably enjoy it more (and lose less balls to the water). Being flat, it is an easy walk around, and on hot days the onshore breeze a pleasure. So, if you fancy some links style golf in the Algarve, with the added benefit of the sun, Salgados golf course may be just for you.

Handicap Requirements for men is 28 and for women 36 and a valid handicap certificate is required. Soft spikes are required as is adherence to the standard golfers dress code.

Facilities include a Driving Range, Putting Green, Chipping Green, Pro-Shop, Restaurant & Bar.

These can however be purchased cheaper through internet tee-time agencies, through your accommodation or if you have booked a golf package through a specialist tour operator.
