Algarve Golf Holidays - Pinheiros Altos Golf Club

Pinheiros Altos golf club, opened in 1992, is located at the edge of the Algarve’s Quinta do Lago estate and shares the area with the two courses at Quinta do Lago (north and south) and the San Lorenzo Golf Club.

It is a members club, with its membership originally open only to those property owners in the Pinheiros Altos village. With development in the village now complete, golf titles were made available to residents outside the resort.

If you want to play here, then you’ll need a handicap certificate, which apparently they are quite strict about now and you’ll also need to be able to book a tee-time. Tee-time allocations are quite limited, and the best way to get a decent one is to stay at the Formosa Park hotel (the course being owned by the hotel owner). This hotel is located just outside Quinta do Lago and staying there will entitle you to discounted green-fees also. Discounts and tee-times are also available if you stay at the Quinta do Lago Hotel within the estate.

Pinheiros Altos is one of the original golf course developments in the Algarve, and definitely ranks as one of the better courses in the Algarve. It is an 18 hole course with a par of 72, but not overly long at 5,766 metres.

The front-nine holes are quite hilly, with the holes meandering through umbrella-pine flanked fairways. The back nine is completely different, being a lot flatter, giving you chance to get your breath back. However don’t relax too much as this nine has plenty of spectacular holes with water to challenge you.

If it has a signature hole, then the par 3 17th is it. While quite short, the island green (which is quite small) is surrounded by water. Have fun!

When you’ve finished your round, there is quite a nice restaurant and bar overlooking the 18th green.
