Penina Golf Course
Penina Golf Course was the first course to be built in the Algarve, way back in the 60’s. It was the brainchild and design of Sir Henry Cotton, who was British Open champions three times. As a course it has hosted the Portuguese Open 7 times.
This 6,723 metre, Par-73 championship golf course forms part of 5-star Le Méridien Penina Golf and Resort, which is a large hotel and leisure complex. Apart from the Championship course there are two others here, a 9-hole Golf Academy and a 9-hole resort course.
The Penina golf course is only 5 km west of Portimão on the EN125, on the way to Lagos, which is a further 12 km away.
The course itself wanders through the trees and has a parkland feel about it. It probably suits the better player and the longer hitters amongst you will benefit here. The fairways are quite wide and lush (perhaps sometimes over-watered). With the course being quite flat, this makes them fairly forgiving. Most of penalties of the course are from the bunkers and the water hazards, and you do need to think your way around the course.
For my money, Penina golf course better courses in the area, but certainly not one of the best in the whole of the Algarve, and perhaps is a little expensive for what you get. Golf buggies aren’t cheap to hire either. But you are in the Algarve, and golf doesn’t come cheap here, especially on the more renowned courses. If you stay in the hotel then you get discounted rates and some deals on offer may get you a free round and discounted rates at its sister hotel, the Méridien Dona Filipa, in the Vale do Lobo resort near Almancil.
It is not particularly easy to book a tee-time here, unless you are staying at the hotel or the Dona Filipa. If you do get the tee-time you want, you’ll have to show a valid handicap certificate (28 for men and 32 for ladies). If you are staying at the hotel, then you probably won’t have to do this. The downside of this, is that if you are playing here as part of your golfing holiday, then you could easily get stuck behind hotel guests who have little or no idea about playing golf. This is particularly true when the resort hosts corporate gold days.
Penina Resort Course
The Resort Course is a 9-hole course, but has 18 tees, so you can have a full round of golf if you want. At 6000 metres (for the 18 holes), with a par of 71, it is no slouch and in many ways is similar to the type of golf course, the Championship course is.
Penina Academy Course
The Academy Course is a 9-hole course of 1851 mteres with par of 30. It is known as an ‘Executive’ which basically means ‘pitch and putt’. However it does have 3 short par 4s to make it more interesting. The rest of the holes are obviously par-3s.
