Palmares Golf Club - Links and parkland golf all rolled into one
Palmares Golf Club is one of my favourites courses. Most people consider courses such as Quinta do Lago, Vale do Lobo and Vilamoura, when they think of the best courses in the Algarve, but they should perhaps add this one to their list. It has a lot going for it. The course is well laid out and interesting in a fantastic setting with probably some of the best views around from an Algarve golf course. From the course you get views of the Atlantic Ocean and coastline, the estuary at Alvor and the bay at Lagos. In the other direction, the Monchique mountains. Palmares Golf course is an 18-hole course, and at nearly 6000m, is a longish par-71 layout. It is located about 5 km from the centre of Lagos in the Western Algarve. Palmeres Golf Course ReviewThe course is a mixture of links and parkland golf, so plenty of variety. After the first hole, a breathtaking hole running down to the sea, the next five run along the seashore behind the Meia Praia beach. After that the course turns inland, and winds through the hills and pine trees, parkland style. It may be at this point that you wished you’d hired a golf buggy. Still, from the top of the hills there are some great views in all directions.The course is a good test of golf and is suitable for players of all abilities. If the wind blows (and we are in the Western Algarve here) it can become very challenging. The front nine is the better nine in my opinion, the back nine holes being a bit the ‘samey’ and certainly not as spectacular. There are a few long walks between tees and a few hills to climb, so consider hiring a buggy. Palmares Golf Club FacilitiesThere is a clubhouse, with a lovely terrace where you can look out across the course and enjoy the views down the valley over the sea. After a round here, up and down the hills you’ll deserve a drink. There is a restaurant here, serving good food. But it closes quite early, so if you’re thinking of spending the evening here and having a meal, then think again.Other facilities include a driving range, putting and chipping green and a pro-shop. Handicap requirements at Palmares Golf Club are Men 28 and Ladies 36. Soft Spikes only allowed.
