Algarve Golf - Morgado Golf Course

Morgado Golf Course is situated north of Portimão the way to Monchique and it is no more than a 15-minute drive from Portimão.

Morgado is one of the newer entrants on to the Algarve golfing scene, and apparently a further 18 holes and a couple of luxury hotels are planned. At 6,400 metres (over 7000 yards) it’s a long one, but there are four par-5s and the par is 73. There are also some long par-3s, with 3 three of them being near or over 200 metres in length. The course can be quite undulating, so you’d be forgiven for hiring a golf buggy. The bunkers are deep and there’s water that comes into play on a number of holes. The greens, while quite large are undulating, so a good score may well depend on your ability with the short stick.

Whilst it’s long, it’s a very enjoyable golf course to play, and there are different tee positions, to make it playable for all. The front-nine is quite flat and not particularly interesting. This is where most of the water hazards are. The back-nine is more challenging and hilly an this is where you get some fantastic views of the Monchique hills. One enjoyable aspect of the course is that it is not lined with holiday villas, so you are playing the courseas god intended. This is quite unusual for this part of the Algarve.

When you’ve finished your round, you can relax on the terrace of the large clubhouse to count your birdies and enjoy the views over the golf course. The clubhouse has a bar and restaurant.

Reports I’ve found of Morgado imply that it is a bit expensive for what it is, as there are better value courses around, but its hard to say what is good value when your in a popular tourist destination, such as the Algarve.
