Your guide to Monte Gordo Holidays

Monte Gordo, or Monte ‘Gaudy’ as my wife calls it, is the Algarve’s last ‘resort’ before reaching Spain. Monte Gordo lies a few miles to the west of Vila Real de Santo Antonio.

It used to be a small fishing village, but has now grown into a ‘resort’, being built up of now with hotels, apartments and bars and restaurants, as you may associate with some of the Spanish resorts. It’s quite a nice place, and is popular to families, couples and singles alike. It is a popular destination with the Portuguese and also with the Spanish, who presumably come here because the prices are so much cheaper than in Spain.

The main attraction of Monte Gordo holidays, is it’s long wide golden beach, which is rated amongst the longest and the best in the Algarve. The sea is a little warmer here, being in the east of the Algarve. Away from the hotels, behind the beach you’ll find sand dunes and pine forests. There is not a huge amount to do here during the day, unless you love the beach and water sports. In many ways it is a perfect place for families. With children in tow and a multitude of beach bags and other paraphernalia to carry, the beaches are within easy reach. The promenade is very pleasant to walk along, and unlike places in the Central Algarve, like Albufeira, you won't get hassled by a continuous stream of timeshare and scratch card touts.

For days out, then just jump in the car and explore the nearby Vila Real de Santo Antonio, Castro Marim or the Sapal Nature Reserve. In the evening life revolves around the restaurants and bars. If you want to chance your arm with a little flutter, then try Monte Gordo’s casino. Be warned, if you want to come out a millionaire, then make sure you go in a billionaire.
