If you’re looking for a traditional Algarve Zoo then why not visit Lagos Zoo?

Algarve Zoo - Lagos

Lagos zoo is not actually in Lagos, but close to the village of Barão de São João on the way to Bensafrim, about 15 minutes north-west in the car from Lagos. I’ve never been convinced of the argument for zoos, but they claim they are conserving and protecting animals and helping educate the public. Whichever way you look at it, it’s a fun and educational day out for the family and a popular Algarve attraction.

I say a “day out”, but to be fair Lagos zoo is not a huge place and you can really get to see all you want in two or three hours, despite there being over 100 animal species and twice as many botanical ones from all over the world.

The best things to see here are the primates, in my opinion. These monkeys and gorillas live on an island with all the creature comforts a monkey needs to relax in the sunshine or climb around. If you catch them in a playful mood you’ll get some great photos.

Apart from the primates, there are more species of birds than you can shake a stick at. All very beautiful and some brightly coloured. There’s a long flight tunnel to see them at their uninhibited best.

There are also reptiles, wallabies, lemurs, and many other types of animal to see here. If you tire of the real animals, there are giant sculptures of animals dotted in and around the zoo, which all adds to the holiday feel.

For me it’s best to see some of the animals at their feeding times. This can be quite entertaining with the keepers giving talks about the animals and answering any questions you may have. If you hanker to learn more, there is a room where you can go and watch a conservation film. And for the kids there is drawing and painting equipment so they can make you a pretty picture of the animals they’ve seen during the day.

Keeping the kids entertained can be a tricky job. You’ll be glad to know therefore, that when they’re fed up with staring at animals, Lagos zoo has a small farm area, which acts as a petting farm. Here you’ll find the usual sheep, goats, ponies, ducks and the like which are used to being terrorised by children.

After that you can run them tired in one of the two children’s playgrounds, while you take a well earned rest. There are a couple of snack bars if you’re in need of refreshment and also a gift shop to grab a souvenir gift of your visit.

If you’re here until it shuts in the early evening, I can recommend finishing off your day by visiting the restaurant located just outside the zoo. The O Cangalho Restaurant serves good food from a Portuguese and International menu. If you can bear it after a day looking at cute animals you could try the roast lamb or the sucking pig! If you do decide to go, it is best planned in advance, with reservations, to make sure you get a table. It is open for lunch a dinner each day, but is closed on Mondays.
