Your Guide to Faro Airport

Faro airport is the Algarve’s only International airport. Most Algarve holidaymakers will arrive here before travelling onward to their final destinations. The airport is not particularly large, but has to deal with the near 5 million passengers which pass through it each year. Even in the height of the season it somehow seems to cope, although as you might expect there can be some long queues. These are getting longer in today’s climate of increased security.

The airport is located about 4 km from Faro town centre and has just the one terminal.

Faro Airport Car Parks

Car parking at Faro airport is pretty good, with the 3 car parks close to the terminal. Short term parking (P1) is located next to the departures area. Short and medium term parking (P3) is available outside the arrivals area and the long term car park (P2) is behind the other two. Hire cars are in a separate car park.

Faro airport car hire

There are a number of car hire companies who have booths within the airport. When you have collected your luggage, you’ll find them inside the Arrivals hall and sort your documentation out. Depending on what company you are using, you will then be able to pick you car up from the airport car park or you’ll be bussed off to a nearby location to get your car.

The car hire companies represented at the airport are:
Auto Jardim, Avis, Budget, Europcar, Hertz, National, Alamo, Rentauto and Sixt

There are also many other local car hire companies you could use, who will get a car to the airport for you to pick up.

Before you book your car hire, make sure you read our Algarve car hire guide and avoid the many common pitfalls when hiring a car for your holiday.

If you are not hiring a car and have not arranged transfers, then you’ll be wanting public transport to get to your resort. Taxis can be caught from outside the terminal building, near the Arrivals hall. For more information, take a look at our Algarve Taxis page.

If you are travelling onward by bus, then bear in mind that buses do not travel to Algarve holiday destinations directly from the airport. You’ll have to get the one of the buses to Faro bus station in the town centre and than catch one to your resort from there. For more information on this and travelling around by bus, check out our Algarve buses page.

Other Faro Airport Facilities

In the terminal building there is a meeting point next to the Information desk. There is also a Tourist Information desk in the arrivals concourse.

You’ll find banks and ATMs in both the Arrivals and Departures concourses, along with a number of duty-free and tax-paid shops. There is also a Bureau de Change and a post office in the Arrivals area.

There are several food outlets and cafes at the airport, although as you might expect, they do not represent the best value for money in the world. But you can enjoy your purchase on the airport’s roof terrace and get those last few rays of sunshine before you leave.
