Balaia Golf Village Portugal, a self-contained resort near Albufeira

Balaia Golf Village Portugal is 35 km west of Faro airport, between Albufeira and Vilamoura. It is about 5 km east of the popular resort of Albufeira, close to the much quieter town of Olhos d’Agua. While not directly on the coast, it is only a few hundred metres from the beaches of Praia Maria Luisa and Santa Eulalia.

The resort is set in well maintained and landscaped gardens. I imagined the resort to be quite small, but it is a lot larger than I had thought. There is certainly plenty of space for the five hundred or so apartments, which are to be found here.

It is best suited to families who can enjoy a safe and relaxed atmosphere away from the beer swilling party-goers of Albufeira.

Balaia Golf Village Portugal Facilities

Pool at Balaia Golf Village>If you like golf then you’ll enjoy the fact that the resort has its own
<a href=golf course. It is only 9-holes, but a great opportunity for a fun game of golf with the whole family. There is also a driving range and a golf academy if you fancy a lesson or two.

For the more serious golfer, Balaia Golf Village Portugal is a good base for playing more serious courses in the Algarve, with the golf courses at Vilamoura only a short drive away.

The resort has six outdoor swimming pools, two of which are heated in the winter months. There are also children’s pools, one in the shape of Mickey Mouse.

Balaia Golf Village Portugal provides a fun and safe environment for children. There are children’s pools, table tennis and a children’s playground. If you want a break from your little ones, then there is a kid’s club, run most mornings during the summer months. In the evening, then baby-sitting service is available.

If you can’t keep away from the gym, even on holiday, there is one in the resort’s health club. Personally, I’d stick with heated indoor pool and Jacuzzi, which along with the gym are free to guests. Additionally the club has a Turkish bath, and massage facilities, but these come at extra cost.

For tennis buffs, there are four tennis courts, which are also open to non-residents. There is a professional on hand, should you want to take lessons. Individual lessons are available and group lessons for kids. If you don’t have anyone to play with, you can either make some friends quickly or get reception to pair you up with a partner. Alternatively, you could take part in one of the fun tennis tournaments which are regularly organised.

Other facilities include a croquet lawn and an area for petanque (a form of Boules).

Next to the main entrance there is a supermarket (which is quite well stocked, but fairly expensive), a couple of shops, a hairdressers and a beauty salon. If you want cheaper supplies then load up at the larger Marachino supermarket towards Olhos d'Agua.

Balaia Golf Village Portugal Restaurants

There are two restaurants on the complex. The A Varanda restaurant has a modern decor and the food is very acceptable. It’s a little more expensive than restaurants nearby but still good value for money. The other restaurant is in the golf clubhouse and is called Le Club with a large pleasant terrace overlooking the golf course.

There are quite a few other good restaurants within walking distance of the resort. The restaurant at Santa Eulalia beach which is well regarded, but perhaps even better is the seafood at the restaurant on Maria Luisa beach.

Getting Around

If you want to venture out of the complex to visit other towns, unless you have hired a car, you’ll have to rely on taxis or buses. You can of course walk from the resort to Albufeira strip in about 45 minutes or so, but a taxi is quire cheap and can be ordered from reception. The resort also lays on a minibus to Albufeira at during the day, the times of which can be obtained from reception.

If you want to go elsewhere, there is a bus stop outside the complex where you can get buses along the coastto the east or the west.
