Alto Golf PortugalAlto Golf course is situated very close to Alvor, in-between Praia da Rocha and Alvor in the Western Algarve. It is about 1 hour from Faro airport.
Alto golf is part of a golf and country club resort, Alto Golf and Country Club. The resort has its own facilities, with villas, apartments and townhouses in landscaped gardens, many with superb views of the sea. Being 2 km from the resort, the golf course is only a few minutes drive away.
Course at Alto Golf Portugal
With a maximum length of just over 6000m, Alto golf is an 18-hole Par 72 course. It is a parkland style course with plenty of trees and bushes lining the fairways. The fairways are undulating, and while the course lies across a couple of gentle valleys, it is easily walked around without the aid of a golf buggy.
For my money, its not he most attractive golf course in the Algarve, although you’ll get views of the Monchique mountains and on the front-nine, glimpses of Lagos bay.
Its not an easy course, particularly when the wind blows, but it is fair course, and can be enjoyed by golfers of all standards. What makes it tricky? Well, the fairways tend to be quite narrow, putting emphasis on precision. There are quite a few dog-legs and a number of the greens are elevated, making distance judgement more difficult. It is a good course to ‘think’ your way around. There are water hazards, but these only come into play on two or three holes. Thee longest Par-5 in Europe, at 604 metres, is on the back-nine.
While I don’t think that it is as good as Penina Golf Course, which is the other course that Henry Cotton designed in the Algarve, it is a friendly place and is quite good value for money.
Facilities at Alto Golf PortugalAlto Golf course has a clubhouse with a bar and restaurant, with terraces overlooking the 18th green and golf course.A few minutes away from the clubhouse are the practice facilities. These include a driving range, practice bunker and target green to practice your short game. Lessons can also be provided here as it is home to the Bennett's Golf Learning Centre. There’s a Pro Shop, where you can hire clubs and trolleys.
