Getting around with Algarve transport
Here’s a look at what Algarve transport options are open to you on your holiday.Unless you've driven to the Algarve or arrived by train, your first port of call will most likely be Faro airport. The majority of holidaymakers fly into Faro airport and then make their journey onward to their final holiday destination. Most people who hire a car for their holiday, will do so at the airport. If you do intend driving in the Algarve, make sure you read our
advice on driving in Portugal.
If you're not hiring a car or hopping on a transfer coach, there are a number of Algarve transport options to consider in getting you to your holiday resort and then travelling around once you’re there.
Algarve TaxisAlgarve taxis can be found outside the arrivals lounge at the airport and are available to take you anywhere in the Algarve. Prices to resorts are generally fixed, but make sure you agree the price with the driver before you set off. Normal taxis can only take four passengers and a limited amount of luggage, so if there's a few of you, you may need more than one taxi.Once you are in your resort, taxis can be a convenient and relatively cheap mode of Algarve transport. Algarve BusesAlgarve buses are a cheap form of Algarve transport. You can get from Faro to your destination using the Transrapido express service (although this doesn’t run at weekends) or the Interurban (normal) bus service, which is slower, but stops at more places. Buses serving the rest of the Algarve depart from Faro bus station, not from the airport.Once in your holiday resort, you can use the bus service to explore other towns and villages in the Algarve. Algarve TrainsAlgarve trains are not the fastest or the most comfortable form of Algarve transport service in the world. There is a regional costal line which runs from Vila Real de Santo Antonio in the eastern Algarve via Faro to Lagos in the western Algarve. It’s not too expensive and to be fair, it's a great way to see some of the beautiful Algarve countryside. However, do your research, as many of the stations are some way out of the towns that bear their name.Find out more by reading our
Algarve Trains page.
Also bear in mind, that buses serving the rest of the Algarve depart from Faro train station, not from Faro airport.
Private TransfersPrivate transfers are a practical way to get from Faro airport to your holiday accommodation and you'll be met in the arrivals hall of the airport by the driver. They are more convenient than buses or trains, as you don’t have to travel to Faro first. They also may be more cost effective, particularly if more than one taxi would be needed (because of the number of people in your party or the amount of luggage you have). Find out more about
