Get back to nature and save yourself a bundle with Algarve Camping
Algarve Camping GuideThroughout the Algarve, you’ll find quite a few campsites, most of which are close to the coast and major resort towns. Those away from the coast tend to be in wooded areas, which are great for shade in the heat of the summer, but home to too many insects for my liking.
Campsites in the Algarve are generally inexpensive, although prices are higher in the summer season. As the Algarve is blessed with a mild winter climate, winter camping is becoming ever more popular, although not all campsites are open in the winter months. If staying on a campsite out of season, there will usually be an out-of-season discount which can be quite significant (30% +), so don’t forget to ask.
If you thought camping was just about nights under canvas with toilet facilities in an old cowshed, this is no longer the case, and many campsites have facilities for caravans and motor homes and some also have permanent bungalow accommodation. Facilities at campsites can vary. Some have swimming pools, supermarkets and tennis courts, while others are less well featured.
Portuguese campsites are classified with a star rating system, with one to four stars, similar to hotels, depending on their location and facilities. There are also campsites which belong to clubs or to the Portuguese Camping and Caravanning Federation where visitors who are members of the F.I.C.C (Fédération Internationale de Camping et Caravanning) or CCL (Camping Club Lisboa) may use.
One of the largest and well appointed Algarve campsites can be found just outside Albufeira. Click on

It can be used as proof of identity so that on arrival at your Algarve campsite. Simply hand in your CCI so you can keep your passport with you. It may get you a discount on the cost of your stay. It also gives you third-party liability insurance for your group during your stay at the campsite.
Useful InformationCamping Obitur is the most upmarket campsite operator with over 20 campsites throughout Portugal and also runs a number of Algarve Campsites. Orbitur operate a discount scheme for members using a loyalty card. These discounts can range from 10% and up to 30% for long stays.
A useful publication giving information on all the camp sites is the Roteiro Campista and is available from most bookshops and kiosks in the Algarve.
If you are intending camping in the Algarve, then do use the campsites, as camping on by the roadside and particular beaches is not allowed. This apparently is enforced on the west coast of the Algarve, where there are miles and miles of deserted beaches.
Campsites are not immune from crime, so be careful and don’t leave valuables on display.
